Regatta Report
10/28/2006 - Day 3 US Pre-Trials
The sea breeze filled lighter than usual and the race began in 5-6 knots. We
won the start near the boat end and our primary competition had a bad start
and had to tack out. We sailed on starboard with the fleet before tacking,
but by that point the right side had filled with more pressure. The lone
boat on the right crossed in first place. We and that boat began to pull
away from the fleet.
At the top of the second beat the action really began. The breeze was dying
slightly, and we started tacking on each other. We had the lead here, but
they caught some shifts in our tacking duel, and just got by us at the
2ndupwind mark. The breeze continued to dye—gybing a 470 in light air
is very
slow. We gybed on each other so many times that the fleet caught up to us on
the last leg. We were left still trying to pass each other and trying to
defend against the fleet!
We finished the race 3rd when one other boat got around us.
We still lead the regatta. There are three scheduled races for today.
