10/26/2006 - Day 1 US Pre-Trials
A good day for Team MB!
Today was the first day of the 2007 Pre-Trials regatta, Oct. 26-29. This is
the first of three ranking events for the 2007 US Sailing Team in the 470
class. We are sailing out of the US Sailing center in Long Beach, CA. We
have been training here for the last week and we did a week long training
camp here at the beginning of the month.
Last night a 'Santa Anna' weather pattern started. This means that there is
a strong morning offshore wind which will need to die for a sea breeze to
fill. Sometimes, it never dies, but rarely is it stable enough for racing.
Luckily, the sea breeze overpowered the Santa Anna and we started the first
race in 7 knots of wind. We were to leeward of the fleet, sailed fast to the
left side and rounded the first mark in 3rd place. We passed one boat on the
run and finished the race 2nd.
It looked like the breeze was going to build, so we set up our rig for the
upper velocities, but half way up the first beat, the breeze began to die!
We had a good start, rounding the top mark in 2nd place, and went on to win
the race.
The third race went much like the last. We rounded the first mark in second
place, passed the leader on the run, and went on to win the race.
Tomorrow, the wind is forecasted to be a little stronger—and we should race
3 races again. Currently, we lead the regatta!
