Regatta Report
9/13/2006 - 470 Worlds - Finals
The internet was down at the hotel yesterday so here is the action you
missed; racing yesterday took place in 6-10 knots. In the first race, we
tried an unconventional start on port tack. In the last 30 seconds the whole
fleet reached down to the pin end and our start was foiled. But we played
shifts well in the middle of the course and got a great race, placing 5th.
The second race ended tragically. We were in 15th place when a Korean team
went insane and began match racing us (trying to put us in last). The Irish
coach overheard me telling this story, and he chimed in: 'You know, I would
not believe you, except I saw him do that to a French guy yesterday!' We
finished the race 22nd, but still we moved up to 19th place overall.
Today's race excluded the top ten overall, because they race the Medal Race.
We had a bit of difficulty on our first upwind, but were smokin' fast
downwind, and passed ten boats. We finished the race 6th, gaining two places
overall *to finish the 2006 470 World Championships in 17th place*!
