9/8/2006 - 470 Worlds - Day 2
The race committee took two hours to sort out the course placement—between
fish traps, the shore, and the women's course area—and made us wait on the
water while they did. When racing got underway we had light rain and 13
knots of breeze.
In the first race, we got a decent start, but our upwind speed was off, and
we could not hold our lanes. We passed boats downwind to finish the race 20
th.
Our speed was still off at the start of the second race, and a minute into
the race we were already behind the pack, so we decided to change something;
we moved our jib lead aft two inches. Suddenly, the boat felt good and we
could race. We were tenth at the first mark, went low on the reach in upwind
current to pass into 2nd at the reach mark. Then at the leeward mark, we
just snuck around the leader. We extended on the second beat and won the
race by half a leg!
The breeze lightened for the third race. We got an ok, start, but this time
got distracted by changing our jib lead! And we lost some crucial position
on the initial starboard tack off the start. From then on we were playing
catch-up. We passed many boats and finished the race 15th.
Currently, we are in 20th place, and scores are still close.
