9/7/2006 - 470 Worlds - Day 1
The first day of sailing brought challenging conditions and light air. In
the first race, we got a good start near the committee boat end of the
starting line, and headed right for relief from the downwind current. We
were looking great halfway up the leg, but the wind lightened on our side,
and we rounded the first mark 18 th. On the second beat we played the shifts
through the middle of the course, and passed into 9th place, our finishing
position.
The breeze had shifted left for the second race, but they set the mark too
far left, so the beat was mostly starboard tack. We got on the long tack
early, and rode it all the way to the top left, got a left shift and rounded
in 1 st. When the breeze destabilized, we missed a few shifts downwind and
lost several boats. We finished the race 4th.
Currently, we are in 17th place, but only 5 points out of 1st. We have 9
more races to sail.
