8/28/2006 - Olympic Test Event - Day 4 & 5
The fourth day of racing brought a turn of events. The fog was so thick that
you could not see each subsequent mark. The race committee made a procedural
error when it changed the course mid-way through the race, so the jury
disallowed the race and it has been erased from our scores.
Today, the fifth day of racing we were briefly postponed ashore to allow a
light south-easterly breeze to build. The racing took place in 4-6 knots of
wind and roughly 1 knot of upwind current (though it was variable over the
course).
In the first race, we won the committee boat end of the starting line, and
tacked out to right side of the course. We looked very good initially but a
puff filled left and we managed a 15th rounding of the first mark. By the
leeward mark, we gained to 10th with thin lanes in the middle of the run. On
the last upwind, we went left, but the right side filled in and we lost 5
boats. We finished the race 15th.
In the second race, we again won the committee boat and tacked, but again a
left puff filled leaving us 15th at the first mark. On the downwind leg we
gained to 8th by calling a good lay-line in the dying upwind current. On the
second beat we played left, but wind shifted right. We lost five boats to
finish the race 15th.
We remain in 4th place, 1 point behind third place, and one point in front
of 5th place. The points are very close even back to 11th place. Our goal
(aside from winning a medal here) has been to qualify for the Medal Race
which will include the top ten teams. There are two more races.
