1/27/2006 - Miami OCR Medal Race

The final day of the Miami OCR brought great breeze and excitement for the new format of a "Medal Race" where your finish would be non-discernable and would count double. Being the first sailors to try this new format everyone in the top 10 had an open mind on what to expect.

We arrived early to the course as usual, but this time our course was unusually crowded with media, coach, and spectator boats. A different Olympic class was finishing up their race when we arrived and the hype of the "Medal Race" soon set it. After tuning up in the 20+ knots of breeze we were ready to race.

We unfortunately took ourselves out at the start by trying to win the pin end. We were spinning a penalty circle at go and were way behind by the time we got going again. We sailed hard but were bummed to not be in the real race at the same time. We were however able to catch up to the back of the fleet enough that we passed a boat when they capsized on the final reach leg.

We finished 10th overall in the regatta which also means we are ranked 2nd on the 2006 US Sailing Team! Because of our 2nd place qualifying place we have now officially qualified ourselves for some grant money from US Sailing, a berth at the 2006 ISAF World Sailing Games in Austria in May and the 2006 Beijing Olympic Test Event in August!
