Regatta Report
1/24/2006 - Miami OCR Day 2
Day 2 did not have a good forecast, but surprised us with wind earlier in the day than expected. We began our first race at 12 noon, in 3-4 knots of wind, and got a great start (a little too good!). We hit the shifts in the middle of the course and rounded the first mark in 5th. Unfortunately, the race committee pulled us and six other teams out of the race because we had all had been slightly over the starting line, scored OCS.
Race two was not much kinder to us. We got an okay start toward the pin and crossed most of the fleet. The wind velocity was pretty even across the course, but we got caught with several tacks in the middle of the course which cost us when the fleet converged from the two sides of the upwind leg. We finished the race 14th.
Race three began in 5 knots, and we got a good start at the pin. When the boats on our hip tacked we tacked with them and crossed the majority of fleet. The beat was mostly port tack and we were going fast up-wind. We held our lane and extended with the lead group. We rounded the windward mark in 4th place. We were fast downwind and rounded right behind third place. We were pushing the front three teams and got even with them but could never execute a pass. We finished the day with a 4th.
We are in 9th place overall and 2nd American. There are seven races remaining so the regatta is still getting started.
