1/14/2006 - 470 North American Champs Race Day 1
The first Day of the North American Championships brought lots of wind and no racing! All sailors went out to the racing area in a steady 22kts of wind. Just before start time, the breeze built to over 30kts and the race committee had to send the competitors into shore. It was so windy that even though no races were held, there were 3 broken masts, 3 bent masts, and numerous ripped sails.
We made the most of the day by launching early and tuning our boat to the big breeze with the 470 North Sails rep. Kei. He got us going fast upwind and we were ready for racing. We will have to wait for another day.
On our sail in we got taken out by a monstrous puff. We were blown over about as quickly as the gust hit, with Graham being thrown from the wire into the water. About an 8 point dive. The boat and more importantly we survived the day with no casualties. Tomorrow is expected to be 15-20 knots, so we plan on making up for our lost races from today.
