8/29/2005 - 470 Worlds Final Day

The final day of racing began where the previous day had left off for breeze, and continued to increase. We kept our set-up the same, knowing that it would be fast. We were the second start on the day so we sailed trapezoid inner loop courses.

Race 1

We had a race winning start at the pin end and immediately put several boat lengths on the fleet. Unfortunately we missed out on the right shift that filled in across the course and were fighting for mid fleet. Our big gains were made on the first downwind with a new mode of sailing that has proven to be extremely fast. We caught up to the top 10 and finished 8th in the race.

Race 2

We had another spectacular start at the pin end, and this time we knew we had to get right. We worked hard for a few lengths off the line and were able to tack and cross the fleet. We headed up to the top right corner and positioned ourselves perfectly on layline, but found ourselves being slowed by a spectator boat that was covering our air. We finally got them to move, and we rounded right behind a Spanish team. We went straight into our new downwind mode and immediately took off. The fleet separated undecided between current and wind and both came out about even. We rounded behind the Spanish again and we split sides with the Spanish taking the left. We looked decent for a while until we had a run in with a Ferry! We failed to notice a Ferry coming through the course and we tacked towards it. A different Spanish team that had gained on us also had tacked and we found ourselves having to duck the ferry. Forgetting about the massive wind shadow, the Spanish team flipped hard to windward. We anticipated the shadow a little too early and we ended up first capsizing to leeward, but we quickly pulled the boat up to continue racing. We quickly put the incident behind us focusing on the race ahead. We rounded the next mark in a close 5th. We had great reaching and downwind speed and passed two boats to finish 3rd in the race.

With the 8-3 on the day we took the Silver Medal in the Silver fleet behind a French team and finished as the top American team! We are very pleased with our result of 34th in the World!
