8/28/2005 - 470 Worlds Silver Day 3
The sky cleared at 8am, but the temperature was somewhat cool during the day peaking at 65 degrees. Current was a minor factor today because tides have decreased in size.
Race 1
The wind built quickly to 15 knots. We got a very good start at the pin, and halfway up the beat we tacked to cross the fleet. We were first out of the left side but at the top of the beat had to duck several boats from the right side. We miscalled the layline, so we lost a few boats to round the first windward mark in 8th place. We held even around the course until the final downwind when we found a nice line of pressure to pass four boats. On the last leeward mark rounding to a tight reach to the finish, we rushed our gybe and lost two boats, who got inside at the mark. We finished 6th.
Race 2
There were actually two "Race 2"'s. The first went very well for us. Again we got a good start at the pin. In short, we were in 4th place on the final downwind leg of the race, when a freight ship came through our course and the race had to be abandoned. It was very frustrating to have raced for an hour and been doing so well with our primary competition doing poorly, only to have the race abandoned. On the re-sail of the race, we sailed a trapezoid outer-loop and we were mid-fleet at the first mark, but on the reach and downwind we gained many places to round the leeward mark 9th. We got too rushed and excited for more gains, and sailed ourselves back four places. We finished the race in 13th place and our competition did well.
We are in 3rd place in Silver Fleet, two points behind second place and eight points behind first place. Tomorrow is the last day of the championship and we will sail two races.
