Regatta Report

8/15/2005 - 470 North American Champs Race Day 2

Race 1, a trapezoid outer-loop course, began at 12:45 in 9 knots of wind. We were fast upwind in our pre-race tuning runs, so we were just looking to get a clean start. We set up for a boat end start, but at 3 seconds an Argentinean team headed down, and hit Graham who was going out on the wire. We got fouled and were rolled by the rest of the fleet. We were forced to the right and were once again playing catch up. At the windward mark, we rounded somewhere around 18th place, and we saw an option to go low to the reach while everyone was fighting high. We made a huge gain and passed boats on the reach. We found a great inside lane on the run and made huge gains. We rounded in 5th at the leeward mark. We passed one more on the next upwind leg, and then on the final reach we rolled the Russian team to finish 3rd in the race.

Race 2, a trapezoid outer-loop course, we got an okay start at the boat, but were eventually forced to tack. We bobbled around the middle of the course for a 15th rounding on the first mark. We gained boats through the rest of the race to finish 11th.

In Race 3, a trapezoid outer-loop course, the breeze continued to build, and was a sustained 15 knots with shots approaching 20+. We started 2nd up from the pin and the footed out to become the left most boat. We had decent speed to round the first mark in 7th. We passed one boat on the top reach and another two on the run to be in 4th, but on the last upwind, the current started dragging the mark and because of this, we sailed past the starboard layline and lost 6 boats. We finished 10th.

After 2 days of racing we are in 8th with 25 points. There is a pack in front of us close in points and easily within reach. Tomorrow is a new day and we are ready to catch the leaders!
