Regatta Report

1/25/2005 - MOCR Race Day 1

Hey everyone! I'm back at it again in 470s with a new skipper.

This time around I'm with Yale Senior, Stu McNay. We showed awesome speed on the practice day in 9-20+ knots winning two practice races and consistently being one of the fastest in our tuning sessions. The Miami OCR this year is the only US Team Qualifier, and we are expecting a great turnout. We have a few international competitors, including two teams that competed in the Olympics. We have 20+ boats, all of great experience. It should be a great event.

Day 1

Races 1 & 2 Conditions: 12 knots dying to 4 with flat water Race 1 We got a decent start towards the pin end, but found ourselves in a tight spot with a boat to leeward. We were pinched off, but soon we had a lane of our own. We played the left side, and came across on an awesome shift. We had a little miscommunication with approaching boats, and fouled a competitor. We quickly spun our penalty circles and were right back at it. On our first reach, we passed two boats we had lost from our penalty turns, and were back in the chase for the top group. We put together an awesome rest of the race to finish 3rd.

Race 2

We had a great start towards the boat, with a lane. We again played the left side of the first leg, and rounded in the top 5. With the dying wind came huge shifts. Everyone in the fleet continually changed positions. The entire race became a toss up, with even the leaders loosing positions. On the last leg, we were looking to win for a while until the wind shifted. We still pulled together an incredibly difficult race to finish 5th.

After the first day of racing, we stand:
4th Overall
3rd Mens
2nd Mens US Team Qualifying

Wish us luck tomorrow!

Graham Biehl
Stu McNay
