Regatta Report
1/24/2008 - 470 Worlds Day 1
Yesterday we raced in an unstable westerly wind, driven by rain clouds and a light gradient. There will be three days of racing to qualify for the gold fleet (top 32) and then three more days of gold fleet racing, followed by a Medal race for the top 10. In the first race, in 7-12 knots, we were very fast around the race course. We had a poor start, which was ok, because our pack was very close to the line and some boats were disqualified for being 'over early'. We were 8th at the first mark 7th at the leeward mark and finished the race 5th. In the second race we got an excellent start in the middle of the starting line. We decided to follow the leeward pack left because we thought we saw in pressure. In retrospect, we should have tacked with the boats on our hip because we were headed 10 degrees. The wind then went right 20 degrees and continued to die to less than 5 knots with big waves. Ouch! We almost clawed back to the top 5, but finished the race 15th. We were disappointed after that race, but are ready to go today! Currently we are in 25th place. There are eleven more races in the series.
