10/9/2007 - US Olympic Trials Day 4
Event synopsis: We hold an 11 point lead over our main competition. There are four days remaining and 8 races to be raced.
Yesterday we had the windiest day of the event so far. In race one, we got out of position before the start and were held away from the starting line. We got free and almost passed them, but were on the outside of big shift and rounded the first mark 8 th. We finished the race 4th.
In the 2nd race, the breeze built more (12 to 18 knots). We found excellent speed upwind and won the race!
*A piece of trivia from an enthusiastic race fan about the Santa Ana winds that we sailed in at the beginning of the event: supposedly the Santa Ana weather condition is named for a Mexican general, General Santana, who won a famous battle by riding out of the desert and surprising his enemy.—This is just like the wind which blows hard from the inland desserts toward the coast.
